We can all agree we never thought we’d be collaborating with such a big name in our industry! SATA UK have been increasingly coming across MULTI-MIX in Bodyshops that use SATA so we thought it would be a good idea to spend some time with them to look at what setup and spray gun is best to get the best by results from our clearcoat.
Jordan sat down with Russell one of SATA UK’s tech guys along with Antonio Martinelli and Andrea Innocenti from SATA Italy and we quickly discovered that the 1,3cc was the spray gun to look at first.
Russell and the team explained to Jordan that the development of the 1,3cc has been uniquely designed to be able to spray UHS clearcoats easily and efficiently. Of course, you’re probably thinking well, any gun will do the job and yes in most cases any gun will lay the clearcoat down however the UHS has a few key aspects that you won’t get the best of if using other guns.
Firstly the application is different to most clears. This is a single visit application meaning a super fine mist coat followed immediately by one full wet coat is applied. This means the clear does have a higher viscosity than other clears so the spray gun needs to be able to break down and atomise the clear finer.
With the clearcoat being a single visit this needs to have a very even application. If the spray fan pattern is not setup correctly this will give the painter a sense of feeling like they’re struggling to apply the clear. The I setup of the SATA ensures an even smooth application.
Pressure is another key thing to note because some spray guns operate best at below 2 bar however in this case with UHS clearcoats it will not atomise the clearcoat properly. Starting off with a pressure of 2 bar with the SATA 1,3cc will atomise the clear perfectly. You will see what you think is a lot of overspray but this is because the clearcoat is creating such a fine spray when atomising it almost looks like fog.
To summarise so far we have found this spray gun to be a perfect match with our MMC4 clearcoat.
